A clay print is a monoprint printed from the surface of a damp slab of clay. Colored slips mixed with pigments are painted on, powdered pigments or grated pastels are added through stencils and textures are carved into the clay. When the image is completed, damp polyester interfacing is placed over the clay. A thin layer of colored clays is transferred to the interfacing using the pressure from a wooden roller. This print process allows for painterly surfaces with richly colored layers.
